Art Calendar | Social Networking for Artists: Tips for Success by By Renee Phillips, The Artrepreneur Coach

Some great information here!
By Renee Phillips, The Artrepreneur Coach

Much like in-person networking, “social networking” consists of communities of people who share interests and/or activities; however, it takes place on Web sites known as social sites. The most popular social sites, like the ones I use — Facebook.com , LinkedIn.com and Twitter.com — are free. Each day, I network with hundreds of artists who use these sites to advance their professional careers. Please note, I do not claim to be an expert on the subject. Like many of you I learn from experience, reading articles and asking questions from more experienced users. I encourage you to read the plethora of “how to” articles available online. You will reap many rewards if you pay attention to some simple tips and put the time and effort into the process. Create and follow a general plan, but also experiment, and make it your own experience.

10 Things to Do Before Launching Your Blog | Small Business Trends

Some great info by author Lisa Barone in Small Business Trends...

There are lots of posts and articles about why adopting a blog for your small business is a good idea. How it’s good for customer retention, lead generation, and serves as a very effective way to build links and rankings in the search engines. But if you’re a small business owner, the thought of launching that blog may be a bit intimidating. Where do you start? How much content should you have stored up? What do you do the first few days after your launch?
If I was launching a new blog today (and I often am), here’s a short checklist for where I’d start.

Take a Look Back in 2009 for Color Trends - Outside Views - Blog on Casual Living

October 28, 2009

As 2009 is winding down let us take a look back at the color trends forecasted for this past year. See if this prediction was on target. The Color Marketing Group, an international non-profit association consisting of color design professionals has been predicting colors accurately for over 45 years. As specified by the Color Marketing Group, the leading selections have been impacted by our anxiety over the economy and our confidence about what lies ahead.

Sargent and the Sea

I would love to see this show!

In Sargent and the Sea, the Corcoran Gallery of Art brings together for the first time more than 80 paintings, watercolors, and drawings depicting seascapes and coastal scenes from the early career of John Singer Sargent (1856-1925), the pre-eminent American expatriate painter of the late 19th century. The Corcoran’s masterwork En Route pour la pêche (Setting out to Fish), 1878, will serve as the centerpiece of the exhibition, and will be joined by other works produced during, and inspired by, the artist’s summer journeys from his home in Paris to Brittany, Normandy, and Capri, as well as two transatlantic voyages. Sargent and the Sea will travel to the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston (February 14 – May 23, 2010) and the Royal Academy of Arts, London (July 10 – September 26, 2010).

5 Historical Palettes: Constable, Goya, Delacroix, Cezanne, and Eakins

Many painters upon observing a fellow artist who displays a mastery of color believe they must have some "magic" color that has solved all their color challenges. This grasp of color usually comes from a deep knowledge of the colors they use and how they relate to the subject.

Over the years color palettes have varied, but they have remained simple and cohesive. As scientific knowledge expanded the colors available, most painters maintained a variety of a classic palette and experimented with others sometimes expanding their palette. The classic palette usually included a white, ochre, umber, red oxide, black, brilliant yellow, brilliant red, bright blue and brilliant rose.

Many historical palettes were relatively limited in the number of colors, and relied on hues that were easily intermixable and compatible. For most artists a basic, classic palette is a great start. After establishing a working knowledge with these colors, one can go on to experiment with others to compliment their work.

Here are the historical palettes of five artists throughout the ages. (Click on the name of the artist for more information.)

John Constable
English, 1776 - 1837

* lead white
* yellow ochre
* umber
* red earth
* emerald green
* ultramarine blue
* Prussian blue
* black

Francisco Jose de Goya

Spanish, 1746 - 1828

* lead white
* Naples yellow
* yellow ochre
* brown ochre
* light red
* vermilion
* burnt sienna
* crimson lake
* cobalt blue
* raw umber
* burnt umber
* ivory black

How Ruff Got His Wiggle Back

I've begun to illustrage the pages for our book to benefit Florida Boxer Rescue. When Ruff was picked up from the shelter who took him in, he was in pretty bad shape, thus the name "Ruff." He was very dehydrated and malnourished. This picture reflects the state he was in. Stay tuned to watch how he evolves to a diamond in the "Ruff!"

"Fishbowl with Ginger"

Amor Fati

by Katha Pollitt

The Mind-Body Problem) --

Everywhere I look I see my fate.
In the subway. In a stone.
On the curb where people wait for the bus in the rain.
In a cloud. In a glass of wine.

When I go for a walk in the park it's a sycamore leaf.
At the office, a dull pencil.
In the window of Woolworth's my fate looks back at me
through the shrewd eyes of a dusty parakeet.

Scrap of newspaper, dime in a handful of change,
down what busy street do you hurry this morning,
an overcoat among overcoats,

with a train to catch, a datebook full of appointments?
If I called you by my name would you turn around
or vanish round the corner,
leaving a faint odor of orange-flower water,
tobacco, twilight, snow?

"How Ruff Got his Wiggle Back!"

I've recently started a project with Lori Johannesen to create a children's book to benefit the Florida Boxer Rescue. Lori is developing the text and I will be doing the illustration. Below are some pencil sketches of our main characters. The story will focus on the recovery of Ruff in his foster home after being rescued. His "fur" brother and sister are Brutus and Twinkie.

The Wild Swans At Coole

Mirrors a still sky;
Upon the brimming water among the stones
Are nine-and-fifty swans.
