Artists go "WILD" for Myakka River State Park

Myakka River State Park has been a beloved hiking, fishing, camping and wildlife observation destination for decades.
It’s also a favorite place for artists.
To show their appreciation, many of the region’s finest creators of visual beauty will be in attendance selling their works via silent auction at the second annual “Wild: Artists & Animals of Myakka” benefit.

The $35 event takes place Sunday at the park’s South Pavilion and features “eclectic Southern food and drink” and on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. the artwork will be on display for free at same location.

Host, The Friends of Myakka River, regularly partners with the Florida Park Service to assist, protect, restore and preserve the 57 square miles of wetlands, prairies and woodlands that spans Manatee and Sarasota Counties.
“I live 5 miles from the park and I’m there almost everyday,” said “Wild” exhibit curator Evelyn McCorristin-Peters. “We must preserve this for future generations.
“There are so many species disappearing and I’ve seen incredible things there. It’s really important to keep The Friends of Myakka River going — it’s one of the best in the state at helping parks.”
Fifty percent of all artwork sales this weekend go to The Friends of Myakka River.

Contributing artists include master black-and-white photographer Clyde Butcher, who maintains galleries in Ochopee and Venice.
Attendees will also be able to purchase a painting by Florence Putterman, a National Endowment Grant recipient.
And pastel specialist Craig Rubadoux should have no problem helping the park and its “Wild Scenic Myakka River” with his work.

In all, about 20 artists are showing paintings, original prints, drawing, photographs and sculptures that depict the fauna of the Myakka wilderness. Participants were asked to submit works that departed from the standard wildlife art.
In addition to serving as curator, McCorristin-Peters will also have an oil on canvas for sale titled “A Barred Owl Skull” (opening bid of $200).
“I actually found the skull in the park on one of my walks,” she said.
At last’s year’s inaugural “Wild” benefit, 75 percent of the works were purchased, raising more than $5,000 for the park.
McCorristin-Peters sold her paintings a “Dancing Manatee” ($300) and “Snapping Turtle Two” ($175).
“It’s nice to know you’re being recognized and raising money for the park,” she said.
Established in 1934, Myakka River State Park offers a form of tropical escapism rarely found these days in the highly developed Sunshine State.
Parks hours are 8 a.m. to sunset daily. Entrance fees are $6 per vehicle for two to eight persons. Attractions include everything from air boat rides to narrated tram tours.
Numerous animals can be spotted from the tree-top canopy walk and 7 miles of paved bike trails as well as the 39 miles of hiking trails.
Observe ancient alligators on the river trail or while in the canoe/kayak.
Get lucky and maybe you’ll spot a Florida panther.
“I moved back down here eight years ago from Delaware and was so happy to find the park,” McCorristin-Peters said. “As an artist, it has been a real inspiration.”

International Women's Day, Courage and Aging

As I hope many of you know this past Sunday was International Women's Day.
A glorious celbration of women and thier achievements as well as their potential.

I've been thinking a lot about the state of women today throughout the world and particularly in our own country. It appauls me that women will not make equal salaries to their male counterparts until the year 2056. Why are more women not up in arms about this? Why aren't they out there protesting and making this an issue. Wouldn't it help our econmy to have the majority work force making more money to spend? But what is most important is just WHY? Do you have an answer?

The process of aging has kind of knocked me for a loop over the past year. I know it's not old but I will be 50 soon enough. My looks have changed and I struggle to think of myself as, well I know this sounds a little cocky, but "formerly hot." I know a few people once thought of me as "hot!" So I feel I can at least say this with the support of those few people. I've never been vain, never even owned a full length mirror, so the thought that the change of my looks was bothering me just really pissed me off! How could I be that shallow?

I've been studying a lot of artists lately and I fell upon this picture of Georgia O'Keefe in her last decade. And my initial reaction without even thinking was look at how beautiful she is. The light bulb went off in my head...it's all just a different definition of what beauty is.

So I've moved on for the most part. I'll just let the changes happen, can't really do much about it anyway. Decided I'll just be glad I'm still here to see them happen.

New Facebook Landing Page!

I recently learned that there is an application we can use to create unique landing pages for our Facebook fan pages. I know that you can create one using fbml, but I hadn't been that adventurous yet.

The application is called Pagelever. For free you can create a landing page for new "likes." Then if you want to you can pay $3 a month or $20 a year for the people who already "like" you. I haven't done this yet, but it could be a good marketing tool to increase your fan base. You could place an image making new fans eligible for a giveaway or a discount on products! What's pretty nice is that you can change this image, it doesn't have to stay the same!

Hybiscus Update!

Hybiscus after receiving the medical attention and love she needed!

There are many times I come to this blog and let you know of animals that need our help. I show you the sad condition they are found in. Honestly I do hope that you can help! But I realize I also need to share, to let others know what happens to some of these creatures who rely on us for their well being.

A while back I visited Florida Boxer Rescue's page that shows the dogs in need of medical attention. I saw Hybiscus on this page and chipped in to help. I hadn't mentioned her on my blog, it was just a spur of the moment thing. Her sad face spoke to me.

Today I received an email from the wonderful woman Dawn, who has been taking care of Hybiscus. She wrote to thank those who had helped her and to share her progress. Just look at this awesome girl! This is the miracle that happens when others just take a moment to care. Oh, and if you may be interested, she's now available for adoption! Click on her picture above to be taken to her page at FLBR! It just takes a moment to fill out an adoption form and you'll be on your way in making a difference!

He is your friend, your partner, your defender, your dog. You are his life, his love, his leader. He will be yours, faithful and true, to the last beat of his heart. You owe it to him to be worthy of such devotion.

Progress of a Painting

DAY THREE

Hello all!
I've recently began a new painting and I thought it would be nice to share it's progress. It's a second painting of the plane trees I photographed in Albi France. This painting is much larger that the last ones I completed. They were a diptych each measuring 24X24.

The new painting measures 4X4' I'm going to try a new background and a more polished line. I kind of got what I was looking for as I moved up the painting, so there will be a lot of reworking on most of it so far. I've also made a commitment to myself to take my time, which is very challenging for me!

Luigi - A Soul That Deserved a Shot at Life

When our volunteers learned about Luigi, it was a story we've heard many times before. Twelve week old puppy who was bald, mangey, stinky, scabby, and well, ugly. He was suffering from horrible Demodex, an Upper Respiratory Infection, and we later learned he had Parvo as well. We couldn't even tell if Luigi was, indeed, a boxer. But, rescuers know there's a gem underneath all that. At Florida Boxer Rescue, we don't dwell on the peripheral. Below the surface there is a soul that deserves a shot at a happy life. We believe that every dog deserves at least that – and we stopped short at nothing for this boy. Sadly,Luigi's young life was cut short due to neglect, sickness, and bad luck,although the little fellow put up a tremendous fight for his life. Our immediate response is to find someone to blame. Whoever had him and let him waste away. The people who passed by and did nothing to save him. The truth is, our energy is better spent remembering Luigi and honoring the time he had with us. There will be other Luigi's and we must be ready for when they come along. Please consider donating in Luigi's name so FBR can cover the vet bills from trying to save his life. Any extra will be used to help save the next Luigi we are called on to save. We must thank the vets and their staffs at Midway Animal Hospital in Homosassa and Florida Veterinary Specialists in Tampa for doing everything possible to try and save Luigi’s life and for making him comfortable and showing him love.

Originally today was to be the day I started a series on what I learned as an Etsy seller my first holiday season. I will get to that but I wanted to express something else first.

In light of the recent events in Arizona this past weekend something I read on Saturday seemed particularly prescient. I have strong feelings about our government as I know so many do. But my strongest emotion over the past year has been confusion. When did so many in the government and for that matter people who care about the government become so openly hostile? What has happened to the polite discourse of opposing views. I in no way want everyone to always agree with me, it would just be so boring and stagnant. But I wish we could all be civil.

In that light I think it is particularly important that our government representatives set the example for all citizens of this country. They should show us all how competent and effective a Republic can be. Instead they bicker, are obstinate and say no just for the sake of saying no. These leaders should be well, "leaders!" They should be the shining examples we point to when teaching our children how they can make a difference in the world through persistence and civility. I'm afraid that the majority are falling well short of these lofty but realistic goals.

This past Saturday was the anniversary of our first President's State of the Union Address. It struck me how what he said could be said word for word today. Our troubles are still the same and our stubborness is still with us as well. History continues to repeat itself, isn't it time to move on?

This excerpt comes for "The Writer's Almanac" with Garrison Keillor.

It was on this day in 1790 that the first State of the Union Address in American history took place. George Washington delivered it in New York City, which was the capital of the U.S. at the time. He spoke before the Senate and House of Representatives, giving a fairly short speech, about the equivalent of three single-spaced typewritten pages.

He began the speech with the good news that North Carolina was joining the Union. He said that countries around the world seemed to be showing increasing good will toward the young American government, that the "respectability" of their revolutionary government was growing, and that the "peace and plenty" with which America was blessed should be considered good omens that the nation would be prosperous.

And in this speech, which he gave 221 years ago today, George Washington talked about the dilemma of protecting the borders, about the need for immigration reform, about how important it was for the nation to support scientific development, and about setting up national higher education. Washington ended his speech with a plea that Congress cooperate with him for the good of the American people. The words he used were these:

"Gentlemen of the Senate and House of Representatives:
... The welfare of our country is the great object to which our cares and efforts ought to be directed, and I shall derive great satisfaction from a cooperation with you in the pleasing though arduous task of insuring to our fellow citizens the blessings which they have a right to expect from a free, efficient, and equal government.”

A few words from Snow White...

Hi all,

Many of you I have never, nor will ever meet, but you helped me. What a change. I went from a bad place where I had lived for several years, to a wonderful cozy home with a mom who loves me dearly. My medical issues were many and costly. You all, some thousands of miles away, contributed so my doctors could be paid. Nice people.

Yesterday I dodged a bullet. Remember that big ugly bump I had on my side? Although the lab said it was okay, my doctor and another expert thought it was odd because normally tumors this big are very bad. It was sent to Colorado State University where it was examined. Gosh it took a long time to hear back from them, but yesterday we learned that the tumor was not bad and my chances of having a long life went way up! Such good news! My mom will need to keep a close eye on my scars and another tiny little bump to make sure nothing strange happens, but my doctor is very optimistic about my future.

I am not quite out of the woods, but I am headed in the right direction. This Thursday I start my treatment for heart worms. I heard it kind of hurts for a while, but once the worms are gone my heart will be good as new. The entire treatment will take two months.

I will update you again soon. Thank you all for caring about a white, deaf boxer nobody wanted.

When you dream of a white Christmas, think of me. ;)

Growing my own, another form of the "new normal" lifestyle

This lovely bunch came from my friend's backyard tree. I've planted several trees myself now along with orange, grapefruit, persimmon, mulberry, papaya, mango, and avocado. I will have grapefruit and oranges real soon! It is so wonderful to grow your own fruits and vegetables!

I also have jalepenos, green and red peppers, radishes, broccoli, I love broccoli, have ten of them planted! Oregano, basil, tarragon, thyme are also dill. Tomatoes are green and growing!

This is a great resource for my "new normal" way of living. But to be honest it's something I've always done, just love to grow! Which is evident from the 3000 palms I have growing in our five acre field! If we don't manage to sell them some day I figure we could have a really cool maze for Halloween!

New Normal vs. We Want Our Country Back

Like most people these days I've been muddling over the state of our economy and our country. I don't dwell on finances. I am responsible, save when I can and pay my bills on time, which is a huge improvement from my younger days. I don't get overly anxious about money because I realize the only way I wouldn't worry about it or the lack of it, is if I were rich. And since that is not the situation I don't want to waste my energy the rest of my life worrying about it. And yes, I realize I have the luxury to have that attitude because I actually have some money.

When the happy balloon burst over our financial world many people were talking about the "new normal." A time when people didn't own ridiculously large homes, autos, and have tons of toys. Somewhere along the road we have become a nation of entitlement. We believe we should have everything and not make any sacrifices. People say they will never drive an electric car because they don't want to give up power. Many are saying they want to keep the parts of the new healthcare bill they like and get rid of the ones they don't. They don't seem to realize that the parts they may not like are the ones that PAY for the parts they do. I'm not sure if or when people will realize that we cannot drive the same road for the rest of our history. The world just doesn't work that way. So I don't think as a whole we have embraced the theory of a "new normal."

The resistance to establish a new style of living could not be more evident in the people who say they "want their country back." I need to clarify something here first. I want to say that I think it is absolutely fantastic that a limited amount of people managed to get together, make their voices heard and make an impact on our government representatives. I may not agree with a darn thing they say, but I respect their efforts and their success no matter how much it befuddles me.

I just wish someone would tell me where the country went if people want it back. Not a whole hell of a lot has changed lately, no matter how much we thought we were going to embrace something different. Change is scary, good or bad, it's still scary and most will resist it. We cannot go back in time. The past always looks better when we look back at it. But I'm pretty sure that when it was the present there were a lot of unhappy, struggling people then as well. Life styles and governments, religion and politics change. That's just the nature of the beast.

But of all times in our country's short history, we have to change. Everything is global now, we are not alone no matter how much you might believe we are by watching the evening news and its lack of coverage of world situations. It would be nice to go back to a time when we were a country immune to terrorism, where we were the super power that could fix the world's problems. But quiet frankly we couldn't really fix them then and we sure can't fix them now. Our military is the biggest in the world but has not had much success for a while. Most times when something is that big someone is over compensating for something that is missing.

So I am creating my own "new normal" and I'll share more on that soon. But I feel pretty good about it. More care is going into my actions, purchases, and choice of how I'm going to live my life. In other words I'm taking time to think about what is important and realize that those are the goals I should be working toward.

I was lucky enough to "meet" this wonderful artist when I first started on Twitter. Sometimes you're lucky enough to find someone you just "click" with even though you have never laid eyes on each other!

Maggie is an amazing artist. Every piece she creates is a celebration of form and color. There is an immediate intimacy in each work that draws you in and makes you feel part of the composition.

Maggie's philosophy toward painting is a bit simular to my own, which may be why I'm so strongly drawn to her work.

"For the past several years, the 2 dimensional canvas has really been my muse with color being the true subject and my subject matter being the introductory form that leads the viewer through the journey of each painting. My paintings are neither representational nor abstract but somewhere in the middle. And, what I have ultimately created is quite simply the emotion behind whatever it is I am expressing."

As an artist I want to make sure that those who purchase my paintings know how to take care of them. They remain a piece of me when they move on and I want to ensure they stay healthy! So here are a few very simple guidelines to follow.

Prolonged exposure to sunlight will fade your artwork. No matter what protection an artist places on thier final work, paint colors fade in light, it's just a fact. So make sure you keep this in mind when placing your new painting.
Never lean the canvas on a sharp or pointed object, this will stretch and distort the canvas. If you have to lean your painting somewhere ensure that the stretcher bars are what is resting on the surface.
Dust your painting with a dry, soft cloth. Never use cleaning solvents on your painting. Many artists either varnish their paintings or will offer to do so at the purchaser's request. Varnish can enhance the painting but this is a matter of personal preference. Varnish will protect the surface from cracking under normal conditions.
Never expose your painting to extreme temperatures, hot or cold. Humidity is also not good for a painting.
If something happens to your painting, do not try to repair it yourself, take it to a professional, you will be glad you did.
And lastly if for some reason you no longer can keep your painting and are unable to give it away, contact the artist, they will be happy to take it off your hands. It is also a good idea to contact the artist if the work changes possession...we like to know where our work goes!

These are very simple guidelines, if you have any other questions, contact the artist, they will be more than happy to help you!

I recently completed this painting for an upcoming auction at The Studio at Gulf and Pine, which will be benefiting Sea Turtle preservation.

I headed on over to Mote aquarium to take some photos of "Harry." It was a great moment to be there the manatees and the turtles were feeding and were very active. I imagined ( and this was confirmed when I dropped off my painting this past Saturday ) that there would be a lot of pretty smiling turtles so I wanted to do something a bit different!

The patterns and colors of the underside of Harry were wonderful so here he is! I'll let you know if the event is successful!
